Gerald Charles Dickens Performs A Christmas Carol in New York City

and Meets with Members of The Dickens Fellowship of New York

Gerald Charles Dickens appeared in a one-man presentation of his great-great grandfather's literary masterpiece A Christmas Carol in New York City on December 4 and 5, 2009. Following his sensational performance, for which he received a most enthusiastic standing ovation, Mr. Dickens graciously met with members of the Dickens Fellowship of New York at a post-performance reception. According to Gerald Dickens, the text he uses for A Christmas Carol readings is based on the version that Charles Dickens used in his performances but with some variations. Recalling stories from his grandfather, Gerald Dickens told how the highlight of Christmas was the family gathering at the home of Henry Fielding Dickens (Charles Dickens's son) and hearing Henry Fielding read A Christmas Carol. Henry Fielding Dickens provided a very energetic performance and at the telling of Tiny Tim's death he became so emotional that he cried. Likewise, at the point in the story when Scrooge awakens on Christmas morning and realizes he is alive and reborn, Henry Fielding Dickens became so animated that his false teeth loosened! In keeping with family tradition, Gerald Charles Dickens's performances in New York will not soon be forgotten by his appreciative audiences.

DFNY President Rose Roberts attended the event with Fellowship members Helen Andrejevicv, Anne Fetsch, Adrienne Mazzey-Moeller, Ilze Melkis, Beatrice Tompkins, and Sylvia Topp. Pictured above is DFNY Vice-President John Galazin with Mr. Dickens.

The Dickens Fellowship of New York and its members seek to keep the memory and study of Charles Dickens alive in New York City. The organization has aspects of a literary society or book club but includes much more as the name Fellowship implies. Our meetings include social events and group outings.  Members are kept apprised of cultural programs in New York City and the tri-state area that relate to Dickens and his Victorian era. Although we meet all the year round, as befitting Charles Dickens and A Christmas Carol, the Christmas season finds the Fellowship in especially hearty spirits.
