Welcome to our monthly meetings for 103 years and going strong: Saturdays 1 – 4 PM at the Yorkville Library 222 E. 79 St. (between 2nd & 3rd Aves.) for 2008/2009.

It is the Dickens Fellowship policy (worldwide) to select a Dickens work for the year to read/discuss. Our latest choice is The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit, his 6th novel- written in 1843-4. Each meeting also has readings, films, special events: all relevant to the life and times (Victorian) of Dickens.

Martin Chuzzlewit is a story of an inheritance of two descendents with the same heritage of selfishness and hypocrisy; and of the need to recognize the existence of other fellow humans. As usual with Charles Dickens it is filled with comic characters but still with the grimmest reaches of criminality.

Charles Dickens dedicated this book to his dear friend Miss Burdett Coutts.

Try to read the assigned chapters in advance of the meeting. You can also read, share, discuss, passages you found very interesting.
